The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
There isn't much I can say about this book that hasn't been said a million times over by reviewers more experienced and better written than I, so I'll just say that it lives up to the hype.
I wasn't bawling my eyes out by the end like other readers say they were, but that could be more a problem with me than with the book, since I don't cry much at anything. This book was definitely a slow read for me, but it was all worth it for the last 100 pages. The relationship between Patroclus and Achilles was amazing; I was worried it would be very one-sided, with Patroclus worshipping Achilles, but the way that they're both so fiercely in love with each other made me believe that love is real.
This book had less action and fantasy than I was expecting, but the strong characterization and very realistic conflicts totally made up for it. I think on a second read, I would like this book even more than I did the first time around.
